kiwi-symposium
about the kiwifruit symposium

Our dietary needs change over our life span. Adolescence, pregnancy, lactation, menopause and ageing all place extra demands on our body. These demands need to be met by our daily diet to maintain optimal health. Including fruit, vegetables and especially kiwifruit in a balanced diet can contribute to good health and well-being at all ages and life stages.

This two-day symposium, sponsored by Zespri International, brings together global health influencers including researchers, academics, health professionals and health media to discuss the nutritional and health benefits of kiwifruit based on the latest research results.

riddet institute

The Riddet Institute is a Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE), one of ten currently funded by the New Zealand government (Tertiary Education Commission). It brings together New Zealand’s leading scientists in food and nutrition in a collaborative, multidisciplinary national network. The Riddet Institute CoRE is a partnership between Massey University (host institution), the University of Otago, The University of Auckland, AgResearch and Plant & Food Research.

The Institute thus unites leading scientists and key elements of New Zealand’s resources in food and related sciences and is a catalyst for innovation to create sustained competitive advantage for New Zealand. New Zealand’s food industry is the country’s most significant economic sector, accounting for over half of export earnings. The Riddet Institute’s prime goal is to fortify the New Zealand food industry with true scientific excellence.

Tauranga: Based in the heart of the ‘kiwifruit country’

The city of Tauranga is in the heart of ‘kiwifruit country’. Tauranga is beautifully located at the entrance to a natural harbour in the Bay of Plenty. Eighty percent of New Zealand’s kiwifruit exports are grown in the Bay of Plenty by over 2,000 growers. The agricultural industry continues to thrive in the region. Its close proximity to the Port of Tauranga, the highest number of sunshine hours in the North Island, a semi-tropical climate, and fertile soils make this region a highly profitable agricultural hub. But there is more…

Tauranga: One of New Zealand’s hot spots

The bustling city of Tauranga is the largest in the Bay of the Plenty and one of the fastest growing cities in New Zealand. Downtown Tauranga has several historically significant areas to explore during scenic walks. Tauranga’s harbour provides the urban area with a magnificent waterfront setting. Fishing, sailing, diving and dolphin tours are easy-to-arrange excursions. Visitors can also check out some of the local natural beauty spots, such as McLaren Falls or the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park.

Tauranga: Rich in Maori history

The name Tauranga means ‘safe anchorage’ or ‘resting place’. It was settled by Maori, the indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand, late in the 13th century. Only one hour’s drive from Tauranga lies geothermal Rotorua – also rich in Maori history. With its boiling mud pools, geysers and natural hot springs Rotorua offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
